May 22, 2010 Marks a Historic Day for the Cryptocurrency Market
On May 22, 2010, a man called Laszlo Hanyecz spent 10,000 BTC on two pizzas prompting the creation of Bitcoin Pizza Day, which is celebrated annually on May 22 . With Bitcoin’s meteoric rise in value the tale of the first ever Bitcoin trade has gained widespread attention .
Those two pizzas are worth roughly $269 million right now and they were worth $690 million when Bitcoin achieved an all-time high of about $69,000 on November 10, 2021 .
So What’s the Story Behind Bitcoin Pizza Day?
Hanyecz wrote on the popular Bitcoin site Bitcointalk on May 18, 2010: “Pizza for Bitcoins?” Laszlo said “I want to buy a few pizzas for 10,000 BTC . Two large ones would be great . You can buy the pizzas yourself and bring them to my house or you can act as a buyer and place an order for me . I don’t want to waste time or do it on my own . I like onions, peppers, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, etc . on my pizza . If you are interested please get in touch with me and we can work out a deal .”
A forum user went back to the topic started by Laszlo saying: “I’d like to order from Domino’s if I knew how to pay from Europe .” Laszlo told this person “Many places let you place orders online . My wife and I sometimes eat at Papa John’s . All of them take credit cards .” The chat did not go on, though .
Laszlo couldn’t get another good deal so he asked “Why won’t anyone buy me pizza? Did you think the BTC I offered wasn’t enough?” A forum user asked Laszlo “Are you hungry or do you just like pizza?” Laszlo said “I think it would be interesting to tell people that I bought pizza with Bitcoin .”
In fact, Jeremy Sturdivant, who goes by the name Jercos on Bitcointalk, got in touch with Laszlo and they trade two pizzas for Bitcoin .
After the shopping was done as planned Laszlo updated his topic on Bitcointalk and said “I just wanted to let you know that I successfully traded 10,000 BTC for pizza .” In his next reply to the topic he said he was open to offers because he had enough BTC .
